Starting a Successful Home Based Business

Written By Kyle Brady

For many photography hobbyists, starting a home based photography business is a dream they have been pursuing for a long time. After all, who wouldn't want to be self-employed doing something that they love to do. And it can be a wonderful career, however it is important to consider a few things before jumping in with both feet. Below are some questions to ask yourself:

Have you defined the type of photography do you want to specialize in? It is critical to to set yourself apart by specializing in a type of photography. Your choice should reflect your personality. It could be weddings, commercial, babies, whatever you find most enjoyable. Do not try to be a jack of all trades and be successful as there will always be specialists who will take your clients searching for their type of work.

What is your marketing plan? Owning a photography business requires much more than just taking great pictures. It also requires that you are able to successfully bring in new clientele on a continual business. This will take a marketing plan that is constantly analyzed and tracked for success. There are many ways to market your photography business. These include a website, yellow pages, newspapers, flyers, posters, press releases, and word-of-mouth. What works in one area may not work in another area. Only by tracking will you be able to know what works and what doesn't.

What is your brand? Providing a consistent experience for your customer is accomplished by establishing a brand that they can relate to. Your brand must describe you and also reach your customer. The brand is more than just logos and colors. It is also about style, a way of doing business and a way of interacting with your clients.

What is your budget? In order to run a successful business you will need to establish a budget in order to set money aside for equipment, advertising, taxes, material, etc. Most importantly you also need to pay yourself! The beauty of a photography business is that with the low cost of digital cameras the price barrier to entry is much smaller than it used to be. However, it is easy to max your credit cards in the purchase of lighting, computer equipment, software etc. A budget is critical to keeping these costs under control.

Where can you turn to for help? It is highly advisable to seek out help from other small business owners. Don't look just for someone who is good technically, but for someone who also is a good business person. They can provide you with a sense of direction and help when things seem overwhelming. With so much to do, running your own business can be very lonely sometimes. A mentor can mean the difference between success and failure.

In conclusion, owning your own photography studio can be a rewarding and exciting career. But it is important to treat it as a business and not as a hobby. I hope that this article has helped you with some ideas to get you started and I wish you much success!
